“A certain spirit flows out of the sacristy the way aromas float out of the kitchen and the Altar Guild is at the heart of that spirit.”
The altar at Grace is the center of our church’s life. It is the sacred stage that allows the liturgy to happen. Its preparation is a behind the scenes ministry made up of devoted members. Most Altar Guild work is done when no one is around but when completed, the sanctuary is transformed into a sacred space ready for the priest, acolytes and congregation to participate in the upcoming service. The table is set with lovingly polished vessels, freshly laundered linens, wine and wafers. Candles and oil lamps as well as fresh flowers are put up. The church is cleaned and bulletins and readings are readied. After the service, Altar Guild members wash and secure the vessels than take the linens home to be laundered. The Altar Guild also readies the sanctuary for baptisms, weddings and funerals.
